America Divided: The Cycle
“The Cycle” tells a sprawling story that begins with housing discrimination and leads seamlessly to segregation in under-funded schools. Lack of quality education and a daunting school-to-prison pipeline channels a disproportionate share of children of color away from economic opportunity and into the criminal justice system.
Next, we see how the political system, through unregulated money in politics, redistricting and voter suppression, can concentrate power among established elites while it disenfranchises poor people and people of color. This tendency toward oligarchy would keep our society from fulfilling the promise of equal opportunity for all, were it not for the efforts of heroic individuals, featured in this episode, to break the cycle.
